From the East:

Well, by the time you read this, the one day class will be over. A lot of furniture to move and a lot of mentoring to do with five candidates from our lodge who will be attending. We will have plenty of degree work ahead of us this summer, with two or maybe three petitions to read at the June stated meeting. These petitions are from candidates who wish to go through the ritual in the traditional manner. And don’t forget that our stated meeting in June will be on the 8th, not on June 1, because Grand Lodge will be meeting in Tucson from June 1 to June 3, so we will be meeting on the second Thursday in June. If you are a Master Mason, you should go to Grand Lodge if you are able. This is a good time to visit with brothers from around the state and country and there is a lot of balloting to be done.

On June 21 there will be an Officer’s Meeting. This will be for all sitting officers and for anyone who wants to become an officer in the upcoming year. Our list of officers and officer candidates is becoming slim, and we need some brothers to get in the line. I wanted to have this meeting earlier in the year, but could not schedule it because we were very busy with ritual work. But now all of our officers have been through all three degrees so far this year and have had a good share of some ritual work, although I’m not saying that they couldn’t use some more. But while our lodge has been doing a good job of training our officers in ritual work, we have not been doing any work towards developing our young officers and training them in anything other than ritual. And that is the purpose of this meeting. Other than performing a ritual to be seated in each chair as Junior and Senior Warden and Master, what are our junior and senior officers supposed to be doing? And will they really be ready for the chair when they become Master? How do they develop their own line of officers as they move through the line? Our officer’s line has taken some serious hits lately with the loss of some key people, some retreads who don’t want to be retreaded and not raising any new Master Masons. When we come to the point where we can not fill the officers chairs, then we will not be able to operate as a lodge.

All of the proposed changes to the by-laws were balloted on last month and the balloting was favorable to make all of the proposed changes. This also included changing our stated meetings from 7:30 PM the first Thursday of each month to 7:00 PM the second Thursday of each month. But do not go and change your calendars yet. After Grand Lodge is over the proposed changes will be submitted to the Grand Secretary who will make sure they are in compliance with Arizona Masonic Code. So it will be some months before anything changes. When we get a decision back from the Grand Secretary, we will give everyone due and timely notice of when we will change our meeting times.

Lastly, please give a prayer for Miss Rachel Blackwood, a Rainbow Girl from Prescott. Rachel is a good friend of one of the daughters of Jeff Grayson, our Secretary. Rachel was recently diagnosed with cancer, and treatments were ineffective, and she has but a few short days left in her young life. If there is no hope of her recovering, we pray to God that her passing may be peaceful and painless.

Fraternally Yours,

Jim Drake, WM

New Master Mason

On Thursday, May 18, a special meeting for Thunderbird 15 was held in which Michael Gattorna was raised to the degree of Master Mason. This is the first raising we have had in our lodge in about 18 months. Michael was initiated last fall, passed in February and now has become the newest Master Mason in our Lodge. Congratulations, Michael and Welcome! WM Jim Drake presided as Master, Ed Bennedicto, Oriental 20, was Senior Warden, PM Stan Woods was Junior Warden, PM Jeff Grayson as Secretary, PM Bob Bell as Treasurer, Aaron Chamney as Senior Deacon, Gustavo Rodriguez as Junior Warden, Clint Molodow and PM Jim Pomish as Stewards and Don Wilcox as Chaplain. We also had some distinguished visitors that evening. M.W. James May, Past Grand Master of Masons in Arizona was in attendance and gave the lecture, W. Don Wilson, Junior Grand Deacon of Masons in Arizona was Fellowcraft 1 and gave the ballot box lecture and PM Bill Robertson was King Solomon. Thank-you to the brethren of Thunderbird 15 and the visiting brethren for some good ritual that evening. And a special thanks to our Grand Lodge officers for taking the time to make this a special evening.

Bikes for Books Winners

On Monday, May 15, the winners of the Bikes for Books contest at Valley View Elementary School were drawn. The school principal is John Won, and the Librarian is Roxanne Larson. Roxanne reported that it took 30 hours to tally the reports on books read by the students, which is how she verifies that the books were indeed read. Seventy-five percent of the children enrolled in the school, which is 556 children, spent over 27,884 hours reading books in their efforts to win the bicycles. The winners were Rana Orgaz, Torrance Tench, Crystal Hendrix, Adolpho Flores, Luis Sierra, Jessica Azernana, Robert Sosa and Gabriella Delgado. Congratulations students, and keep on reading! And our thanks to the Public Schools Committee, who put this together.
