Greetings from the East:

I know that we have all been saddened by the disaster that has hit the Gulf Coast. At the September 1st Stated Meeting, it was decided that we would be donating $200 to the MSA in Florida to help with the rebuilding of damaged Lodges in the Pensacola area. I have also sent out a letter to everyone urging all of us to donate a minimum of $5 and up to the MSA Disaster Fund.

On October 15th our lodge will be honoring the widows of our fallen members. Beginning at 4:00pm, there will be a program and then dinner at 6:00pm. All are welcome to join us. This will be held in the Red Fez Room at the El Zaribah Shrine Center located at 552 N/ 40th Street. Please RSVP to me so that we can let the Red Fez Staff know how many to prepare for.

I am urging all our members to become more active and participate in degrees and become officers of the lodge (elections are coming up in November). Sometime in November, there is an upcoming picnic and I would like to see everyone join us (date has not been set as of yet). I know that my prayers and as well as yours are with those who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. So let us continue to keep all of those affected in our hearts as we attempt to recover, rebuild, and rise from this tragedy.

Reza Farrokh PM, Worshipful Master

From the West:

Widows Night is set for October 15. There will be guest speakers and presentations starting at 4:00 PM followed by dinner at the Red Fez at 6:00 PM. This is a sit down dinner, not ordering off of the grill menu as in the past.

Worshipful Brother Chuck Bent, our Junior Warden recently had to go into the hospital for a suspected heart problem, but the heart doctor couldn’t find anything wrong, so they have to further investigate the cause of his chest pains. Our prayers go out to Chuck that the doctors will soon find the cause of his problems and he will soon be sitting with us in Lodge again.

At the September stated meeting we approved funds for purchasing bicycles for our two Bikes for Books programs - at the Papas School and at Mountain View Elementary School. Brother Derek Longstaff is taking care of purchasing the bicycles. We also have the School Essay Program coming up soon. The essays are due in the beginning of November. Brother Clint Mulodow is working on that with Mountain View School. Grand Lodge has declared November 13 - 19 Public Schools week, and any activity occurring in Lodge during that week has to be directed toward supporting Public Schools programs. The Masonic Lodges and their appendant bodies each support various charity programs. The Blue Lodges support programs with the public schools, particularly reading programs, because the Masons recognized long ago how important it is to society that all children have an equal opportunity at having a good education, and having the opportunity to start life “On The Level”.  And the core of a good education is the ability to read and write, thus we have Bikes for Books, which aids in reading and the Essay Program, to aid in writing.

Several years ago when we started our Bikes for Books program at Valley View Elementary, the Librarian said that she had never seen anything spur the students on to reading the way our program did. That is one of the reasons I am a Mason, to see some of the good we can do for the community and help make this a better society, especially for the young. If we had a few more Brothers interested enough to come to Lodge and work on these programs, even if that was the only thing that they did with our Lodge, I wonder how many more schools and children we could work with.

Jim Drake, Senior Warden
